CONNECTION

The NBOME works with organizations across the medical education and healthcare spectrum to educate on osteopathic distinctiveness and the role of assessment. We continuously work to identify and eliminate biases that could disadvantage osteopathic medical students in the pursuit of graduate medical education and licensure.

COALITION FOR PHYSICIAN ACCOUNTABILITY

The NBOME participated in the Coalition for Physician Accountability’s UME to GME Review Committee, which in August 2021 published several recommendations to improve the UME-GME transition for DOs.

In particular, Recommendation 18 calls for the equitable treatment of residency applicants regardless of licensure examination, by entering COMLEX-USA and USMLE scores within a single field in ERAS.

THE SPECIAL COMMISSION ON OSEOPATHIC MEDICAL LICENSURE ASSESSMENT

The NBOME convened the Special Commission of Osteopathic Medical Licensure Assessment after the indefinite suspension of COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE. The Special Commission comprises representatives from GME and UME, licensure, COMs, students, patients and many more groups. It has been tasked with finding new and novel ways of assessing clinical skills and also assuring that the COMLEX-USA licensure examination pathway continues to evolve with the rapidly changing practice of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic medical education and health care.

STUDENT EXPERIENCE PANEL

In June 2021, the NBOME formed the Student Experience Panel, or SEP, aimed at learning directly from learners about their experiences with and feedback on various NBOME initiatives as well as its products and services. Organizations are invited to nominate student leaders to participate. These include:

LIAISON COMMITTEE

The NBOME Liaison Committee serves to interact with and better understand the needs and perceptions of NBOME’s stakeholder groups for COMLEX-USA and related programs, including the following: the public and State Medical Boards (AAOE, FSMB), examinees (osteopathic medical students, residents, and physicians), the osteopathic medical schools (AACOM), Graduate Medical Education and Residency Program Directors (AODME, OPDA/CMSS) and the AOA.

PEER ORGANIZATIONS

The NBOME works with its peer organizations, such as AOA and AACOM, to amplify pride in the osteopathic profession and continued advocacy work on behalf of our students and physicians.

STATE OSTEOPATHIC ASSOCIATIONS

The NBOME collaborates with several state osteopathic associations to increase awareness about osteopathic students and their qualifications, particularly among residency programs.
